Betta fish, or Siamese fighting fish, are popular aquarium fish.  They are often called 'bettas,' and are part of the gourami family.  They are well known for being territorial fish and 'fighting' if two are placed together or they see their reflections.  Betta fish originiate from Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand natively.  Despite popular belief, they are not found in puddles.   In the wild, they live in standing waters, often in rice paddies, floodplains, or canals.  In the wild, they are less territorial due to the large space they live in - they will only spar, not fight to the death.Betta fish grow to be no longer than 3 inches, typically.  Their usual lifespan is 2-5 years.   They have brilliantly colored fins, and various tail types.  Common colors include red, blue, black, white and orange.  More rare colors include metallic, copper, and turquoise.  Though some betta fish are solid, they can be multicolored and often have different tail appearances. Betta fish can breath directly from the water surface, as they are labyrinth fish.  Thus, a common misconception is that betta fish can be placed in a cup and will be happy.  Though they can survive in such a small cup to some extent, betta fish should be kept in a minimum 2 gallon tank.  The temperature should be kept at 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.  Colder water can kill the betta, as the betta's immune system will slow and make them susceptible to disease.  Hotter water can make them uncomfortable and age quickly, as their metabolism will increase.  The temperature should be maintained with a heater.Though pet stores sell generic food, you should ensure that you feed your betta fish appropriate food. Generally, betta fish can eat a wide variety of food.

Betta fish should be fed twice a day. You can take a small pinch of food in the morning, and a small pinch in the evening. Betta fish need to be fed a proper diet. Extra food will become waste and generate toxins when they sit in the bottom of the tank. Check to ensure that your fish is not gaining weight - a bulge may develop in their belly area if they are eating too much!. If your fish overeats the extra food, it can become ill and develop illnesses due to overeating.

Betta are well known for being highly territorial, with males prone to attacking each other if housed in the same tank; without a means of escape, this will usually result in the death of one or both fish. Female betta can also become territorial towards one another in confined spaces.[10] Betta are exceptionally tolerant of low oxygen levels and poor water quality, owing to their special labyrinth organ, a characteristic unique to the suborder Ana bantoidei that allows for the intake of surface air.[11]

Siamese fighting fish are endemic to the central plain of Thailand, where they were first domesticated at least 1,000 years ago, among the longest of any fish.[6][7][8] They were initially bred for aggression and subject to gambling matches akin to cockfighting. Betta became known outside Thailand through King Rama III (1788-1851), who is said to have given some to Theodore Cantor, a Danish physician, zoologist, and botanist.[7] They first appeared in the West in the late 19th century, and within decades became popular as ornamental fish.
